A field guide to beaches at golden hour

tides, timing and sand.

Tide tables, wind direction and the twenty minutes that make a beach elopement glow.

Beaches are generous at golden hour and merciless at noon. Plan your portraits for the last hour of sun, and check the tide table before anything else.

Low tide is your friend

A falling tide leaves wet sand that mirrors the sky. It doubles the light and turns an ordinary stretch of coast into something cinematic.

Bring a towel, a spare pair of shoes and a sense of humour about sand in everything.
