Heirlooms, and why I photograph them first

small things that carry everything.

A grandmother's ring, a father's cufflinks, a handwritten letter — the quiet objects that open every wedding day.

Before the dress, before the make-up, before anyone is nervous, I ask for the heirlooms. A ring passed down three generations. A rosary tucked into a bouquet. A note from someone who could not be there.

Why first?

Because these are the photographs families come back to in thirty years. They deserve unhurried light and full attention — not the five minutes left over at the end of the morning.
